Members of the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), Fountain University, participated in the Campus Reporter/Next Gen Campus Journalism Programme organised by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) in Osun State, where over 40 student journalists were trained in ethical reporting, investigative journalism, and storytelling.
The three-day training, held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, brought together student journalists from institutions including Fountain University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Osun State University. The programme created an opportunity for participants from different campuses to interact, share experiences, and build networks within the field of journalism.
The training featured seasoned journalists and media professionals such as Kabir Adejumo, Idris Akinbajo, Victor Ejechi, and Gbolahan Ogunsolu, who facilitated sessions focused on strengthening journalistic and multimedia skills. Through their sessions, participants were exposed to real-world media practices and the evolving demands of modern journalism. Participants engaged in practical learning covering ethical reporting, investigative journalism, fact-checking, and storytelling.
The facilitators emphasized the importance of accuracy, credibility, and responsibility, particularly in campus journalism where information spreads quickly among students. Idris Akinbajo, Managing Editor at Premium Times, noted that campus reporters serve as “the first line of defence against misinformation” within their university communities. He added that without complying to ethical standards, journalists risk losing credibility.
For members of UCJ Fountain University, the training provided an opportunity to strengthen their skills and gain practical insight into journalism practices. Speaking on the experience, a UCJ representative Ifeoluwa Jones, described the training as “insightful and necessary for improving the standard of campus journalism within the university.”
The training forms part of CJID’s efforts to equip young journalists in Nigeria with the skills needed to promote credible reporting within campus communities and beyond.
